Week 84: A Trip to the Hospital But All is Well!

So I'll get the email subject out of the way first. On Saturday, Elder Lister had a fever and so he took some cold medicene and went to bed. But, on Sunday morning at around 3 am he woke up and said he had intense stomach pain so after calling Sister Szabadkai, we went over to the hospital and after a series of tests and checkups, everything turned out fine. It turned out to be a bad stomach ach from food poisoning. We are grateful we didn't have to stay there more than a day. I have never been that bored in my life!

Anyways, this week we met with three of our investigators: Zsofi, Szandra, and László. Szandra's parents are both members and she expressed that she will be baptized, it is just a matter of when. We will be talking about that today.

This week we also went on splits with the Pécs elders. I went with Elder Jameson who is in the pic. He is super cool! He was born in Utah and he came to country in August when I was secretary! He is serving with Elder Fisher, my MTC companion.

Despite the craziness of life, when I pray, I almost always feel the spirit. When I express my feelings, thoughts, and concerns, the spirit is always there. I challenge you all to pray with a sincere heart and pray as if you are talking with Heavenly Father. His love is always there. Also be sure to invite your friends to watch and share the Easter message which can be found at lds.org! The Lord's new prophet will talk with us this coming week. Be prepared for that! This will be a fantastic and unique general conference! I love you all and have a Boldog Húsvétét!

Love,
Elder Ballard

Week 83: The Land of Pure Imagination

You may all be wondering why I'm quoting Willy Wonka, well, let me tell you...

This week we got to go on splits with the elders in Kaposvár. Kaposvár is a city south west of Dunaújváros and it is where Elder Lister served when he first arrived in country. We went on splits with Elder Castellano and my good old companion Elder Surdu! Kaposvár has a sugar factory and the downtown part of the city is really pretty. While walking through the city, all that kept coming into mind was Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka so now I call Kaposvár "the land of pure imagination." It just seems like a jolly, sugar filled city to me, anyways, let me tell you about the highlights of the week...

While traveling to Kaposvár we had to change trains at a city near the Balaton, the largest lake in Europe. It turned out that the train that would take us to Kaposvár did not come in a long time so, we took some pictures of the Balaton. Prettiest, lake I have ever seen!

We had zone conference and a missionary leadership meeting with Elder Johnson, the area president, and his wife Sister Johnson. It was incredible feeling the spirit they brought and learning from them how to better help our investigators. One thing that Elder Johnson said that I thought was really cool was  "In order to understand teaching, we need to understand learning." In order for us to learn the gospel, we must live according to it. We were all challenged to do all that we can to continually live according to the gospel and to continuously be exactly obedient.

While on splits in Kaposvár, we tracted into an older woman whose husband passed away from cancer 9 years ago. She is still struggling with his death. She thought that with time, her heart would heal but the healing, she said, has not come. Me and Elder Castellano knew what she needed but she told us that she did not believe that we could help with it. We gave her a Plan of Salvation pamphlet and promised that if she read it and pray about it, she will find that healing. She agreed to do that. I told Elder Castellano to follow up with her a couple weeks later.

I had a good discussion with Elder Lister about the Lord's timing and His grace. It is incredible that by the grace of God, we can be clean from our sins, and that this work is possible. I know that faith is power and that as a part of faith, we need to believe and trust in the Lord's timing for all His children. I love you all and have a great week!

A cool guy we talked with on the train.

There was a circus being set up in Duna but we couldn't go to it.
The great train station of Duna.

Week 82: Székesfehérvár splits

Sziasztok!

So this week was kind of crazzzyyy with transfers and all but I settled in well in Dunaújváros. The building is very nice and the members are the kindest ever! They were all pretty surprised with my last name. Anyways, Elder Lister is awesome! He is 25 so he is a couple years older than me but he is the kindest missionary! He is going home this transfer so me and him are going to go hard this transfer! He is from Ft. Collins, Colorado and went to BYU for 3 years. We are starting BYU at the same time this year.

Anyways, our district consists of 2 sister missionaries and the elders in Székesfehérvár. Elder Howard from Székes is the district leader so we will be going to Székes a lot this transfer. We were there twice this week, once for splits and the other for a baptismal interview. Exchanges went really well! While we were whiteboarding in the downtown area of Székes, this lady comes up to me and says she wants a Book of Mormon. She lived in Russia and wanted a Hungarian Book of Mormon but never received one. It was a miracle we ran into her because she has been living in Székes for the past couple of years and never saw the missionaries. We were able to give her one and we exchanged numbers!

This week we will be going to Budapest twice because Elder Johnson from the area presidency is coming to speak to us! I am really excited to hear from him this week! I hope you all are doing great! I love you all and have a great week!

Love,
Elder Ballard

A Letter from Joshua's Mission President

Dear Brother and Sister  Ballard:

Elder Joshua Bradley Ballard has been called to serve as a Zone Leader in the Hungary Budapest Mission.

As a Zone Leader, Elder Ballard will set an example for the missionaries in his zone through his study of the scriptures and the gospel, obedience, hard work, proselyting skills and other aspects of missionary work.  He will continue to carry a full proselyting load in his assigned area.  He will supervise, teach and inspire the missionaries in his zone. He will plan and conduct monthly Zone Leader training.  He will conduct companion exchanges with missionaries in his zone.  He will interview baptismal candidates.  He will look after the well-being of the missionaries in his zone.  He will fulfill a fundamental role in the success of the mission and of the missionaries.

Elder Ballard has been called to this position through inspiration, and because he is a trusted and faithful missionary.  He is a proven leader.  We commend him for his preparation and for his dedication to missionary work. You can be justifiably pleased with his service.

Sister Szabadkai and I are honored to be able to serve with Elder Ballard in this great work. We look forward to his service in this new assignment.

Szeretettel,

Szabadkai JózsefMission President

Week 81: Heading off to Dunaújváros

Well everyone, the time came for me to leave Győr and head to my new city Dunaújváros which means "Danube new city." It was built during communism so it is full of ten and five stories but I heard the members and branch are really nice. I will be a zone leader with Elder Lister. This will be his last transfer. I can't believe the time is slipping so fast. I feel this is my last area so I plan on going all out! I will get to travel to the cities in the Southwestern part of Hungary and that will be exciting too. I will keep you all updated on this new adventure.

But, I am super grateful for Elder Hess. I am really sad that we didn't stay together but I know that the Lord has great things planned for him and for his service in Hungary. I hope and pray that the investigators and people we found here will continually progress to baptism. I would have to say this transfer I learned to expect miracles and to trust in my father in Heaven a little bit more. As a result, Elder Hess and I saw so many miracles. We made a calendar and on each day we wrote down a miracle we witnessed. This is a good thing to do at home as well! Record your miracles! :)

Győr will always be close to my heart. I am grateful for the friendships I made here and the things I learned. I hope the Lord will continue to bless this city.

Sok Szeretettel,
Ballard elder

Week 80: Majdnem Meghalt a Társomnak Fényképezőgépe

So this week on Monday we decided to go do a temple tour and see all the main temples in Győr. We rode our bikes all around the downtown area of Győr and we took several pictures. We also got to throw a Frisbee and whip on an island in the center of Győr. While riding, Elder Hess's camera took a hard hit and fell into a puddle. We ran home and put in the bowl of rice and now it works fine #miracle.

Yesterday, Roland came to church and he said he felt really good during sacrament meeting. We are meeting with him on Thursday with our ward mission leader. We are going to help him get off of smoking. He said he really wants too but he needs help. We are also meeting with Eszter this week. We have not met with her since she had her baby but she is feeling up to meeting so we are excited.

We went on two exchanges this week, once with Elder Gajdos (my old companion) and Elder Huber and the other with Elder Beeton and Elder Millett. We are working on relying on the spirit and addressing our investigator's concerns and needs. We got two let-ins in both of our exchanges which were pretty cool. We went to a village outside of Győr and despite it snowing a bit we went tracting and we got a let-in by an older lady whose son was also home. We taught them the restoration.

On Saturday, Tatabánya had a baptism and they came up to Győr for it. I got to say hi to some of the members and talk with them. We also did a special musical number. The spirit was really strong and I felt so happy seeing them happy! That was the first baptism in Tatabánya in over 2 years!

After the baptism, there was a doughnut/costume party. In Hungary, people celebrate the ending of winter by dressing up and "scaring" away the winter. So we had a costume contest and the kids dressed up as well as the bishop.

I read this week out of the Book of Mormon and I wanted to share it with you all: (Moroni 78:36-37)

36 Or have angels ceased to appear unto the children of men? Or has he withheld the power of the Holy Ghost from them? Or will he, so long as time shall last, or the earth shall stand, or there shall be one man upon the face thereof to be saved?

37 Behold I say unto you, Nay; for it is by faith that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men; wherefore, if these things have ceased wo be unto the children of men, for it is because of unbelief, and all is vain.

Angels are real and miracles are real. We need to have faith! I love you all!

Szeretettel,
Ballard elder
